Key Words Ritual Magic
Description This rite must be performed over a leyline, which can be detected using the Ritual Magic skill. As well as knowledge of this rite, the performer (or performers) need a certain combined ritual skill. The length of the rite, and the ritual skill required, depends on the power of the leyline.
  • Lesser leyline power: A short rite (2 minutes) and 3 ritual skill points
  • Average leyline power: An average rite (5 minutes) and 6 ritual skill points
  • Greater leyline power: A long rite (10 minutes) and 9 ritual skill points

If successful, this rite can generate an instantaneous, dramatic effect, depending on the power of the leyline: a lesser leyline can power one casting of one mass spell, such as Earth Shock or Spirit Storm; an average leyline can power three simultaneous castings of any exalted spell; and a greater leyline can power vast, battlefield-spanning effects including earthquakes and firestorms (subject to referee interpretation).

The rite may fail, causing an immediate, destructive backlash, if any of the following occurs:

  • The rite is interrupted
  • The performers have insufficient skill
  • The performers attempt something beyond the leyline’s capacity
  • The rite’s intentions are unclear
  • Onother group of performers attempts to tap the same leyline while the rite is ongoing

Even if all requirements are met and the rite is performed perfectly, there is a fifty-percent chance of the rite failing and inflicting backlash. This chance may be improved with research.
