| Description || The character can, with access to a laboratory and at a cost in work units, identify the alchemical traits of herbs or other ingredients. Analysis destroys one unit of an ingredient.
This process can be performed more than once, consuming one unit of the ingredient each time. The first analysis, at a cost of 10 work units, identifies the ingredient’s primary trait; the second, at a cost of 20 work units, identifies its secondary trait; and the third, at a cost of 30 work units, identifies its tertiary trait. Thus, identifying all three of an ingredient’s traits consumes three units of the ingredient and costs 60 work units in total. Subsequent analyses must be performed by the same alchemist, i.e. merely being told an ingredient’s primary trait is not sufficient to allow analysis of its secondary trait.
This process grants the character a close understanding of the ingredient that will grant a discount to research targets when using it. Note that while the alchemist can tell others the ingredient’s traits (which can be invaluable for research), this does not also confer the discount.

Description The character can, with access to an alchemist's laboratory and at a cost in work units, identify the primary alchemical trait of a herb or other ingredient. Analysis costs 10 work units and destroys one unit of an ingredient.

This process grants the character a close understanding of the ingredient that will grant a discount to research targets when using it. The alchemist can tell others the ingredient’s trait (which can be invaluable for research), but this does not also confer the discount.

The number of work units the character receives each day depends on how many skills they know that use them, see Magic Points and Work Units.
